About RSPCA

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) are one of the oldest organised charities having been set up in 1824. They were also the first animal welfare charity to be founded in the world. They were granted its royal status by Queen Victoria in 1840 to become the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Every day the RSPCA :

  • Rescue over 370 animals
  • Investigate nearly 400 cruelty complaints
  • Treat almost 600 animals in our hospitals
  • Give almost 200 animals a new hom

Their mission statement is simple :

"The RSPCA as a charity will, by all lawful means, prevent cruelty, promote kindness to and alleviate suffering of all animals."

Where Does Your Money Go?

For every £1 you donate, 84p goes directly to protecting and caring for animals.

The RSPCA works in 4 key areas to protect animals in both the UK and throughout the world - wild animals, pets, farm animals, and animals used for research. Below is a brief outline of some of the ways they help animals in these categories.

RSCPA help wild animals by :

  • making it socially unacceptable to hunt and kill any wild animals in the name of sport
  • aiming to stop the use of wild animals in circuses
  • stopping the keeping of exotic animals as pets in unsuitable conditions
  • stopping the ivory trade worldwide
  • ensuring any use of performing animals in the UK follows appropriate guidelines

RSPCA help pets by :

  • aiming to end cruelty to all pet animals
  • pushing for every pet to be cared for properly and have a good home
  • stopping pet overpopulation
  • raising standards for pet animals worldwide

RSPCA help farm animals by :

  • aiming to have all farmed animals in the UK kept to RSPCA higher welfare standards
  • improving farm animal welfare legislation and it's enforcement
  • encouraging consumers to replace daily shopping such as meat, eggs and dairy products with those from higher welfare production systems
  • ensuring animal products are properly labelled in shops so consumers can make higher welfare choices
  • stopping the cruel live export of farm animals for slaughter from the UK.

RSCPA help animals used in research by :

  • working to end substantial suffering in experiments
  • challenging the necessity and justification for using animals
  • raising the welfare standards of laboratory animals worldwide
  • ensuring UK standards are improved as the new European law is implemented.
