Cancer Prevention and Lifestyle

Many people believe that developing cancer is purely down to fate or bad luck. But through scientific research, we know that our risk actually depends on a combination of our genes, our environment and aspects of our lives, many of which we can influence.

In the UK, more than one in three people will develop cancer at some point in their lives. Every year, around 300,000 people are diagnosed with the disease- a greater number than the population of a city like Nottingham or Belfast. But experts estimate that up to half of these cases could be prevented by lifestyle changes, such as:

  • not smoking
  • cutting back on alcohol
  • keeping a healthy body weight
  • eating a healthy, balanced diet
  • keeping active
  • staying safe in the sun

Spotting cancer early

When cancer is found at an early stage, treatment is often simpler and more likely to be successful. So, spotting cancer early can make a difference.

It’s a good idea to get to know what's normal for your body. That way, you are more likely to notice any unusual or persistent changes that may be early signs of cancer. Nearly three quarters of cancer cases are found in people over 60, so as you get older it’s even more important to keep an eye out for any unusual changes and see your doctor if you notice anything.

Cancer screening is a way of detecting early signs of certain types of cancer, before symptoms have a chance to develop. In the U.K there are screening programmes for breast bowel and cervical cancer.

About Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK (CRUK) is the world's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. They fund the work of more than 4,800 scientists, doctors and nurses across the UK, all working together to beat cancer.

Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s. But one in three of us will still get cancer at some point. Our groundbreaking work, funded entirely by the public, will help ensure that millions more people will survive.

They work in partnership with others to achieve the greatest impact in the global fight against cancer. We provide life-changing information to anyone affected by cancer. We run awareness initiatives so that cancer can be detected early and help people reduce their risk of the disease. And our campaigning and lobbying keeps cancer at the top of the political agenda.

They receive no government funding for our research so our supporters are crucial if we are to continue to make real progress against this disease.
