While the increase in demand for bio fuels does at least show a greater awareness of the need for renewable energy sources, I do find it depressing that we're going to ever greater lengths to find ways of making our energy-wasting habits sustainable. Surely the easier route would simply be to waste less and use less fuel. The spiraling cost of rice is now threatening to put a real human cost to the obsession we have with our motor vehicles.

Interesting article Colin.

I was talking about this to a couple of my friends and we were discussing how all these cars and equipment travel round the world for the races - I'm guessing it's by plane.

Each team probably has it's own plane and think of the carbon footprint traveling to the 18 odd races from Bahrain to Brazil and everywhere in between!

Having said that they're not going to ban F1 (mores the pity - it's a bit boring!) so any effort made to make the sport more green has got to be a good thing!

Does anyone know if there is an equaivqalent organisation to the RSPB in Australia ? I was a member of the RSPB in the UK which was great but have since moved to Oz and would like to join something similar but have had no luck in finding a similar organisation. The bird life over here is amazing - we get kookaburra's, parrots honeyeaters and fairy wrens in our garden and it would be great to join a group where I could learn more about them. Any tips much appreciated.

I hear that 'big Al Gore' is not just a 'prominent environmental activist' any more - I read that he turned-out for Richard Branson a couple of weeks back at the London media launch of Virgin Media's broadband-tv-phone broohaha. Al's a big unit these days - and has clearly given up all hope of returning to front-line politics in the US; let's hope he does some good with this 'Live Earth' initiative.
