Tractor Road Run for Cancer Research UK

Over 100 ‘pink ladies’ drove decorated tractors through Norfolk in July 2011, raising a whopping £36,000 for Cancer Research UK. The annual Ladies’ Tractor Road Run was conceived by Annie and John Chapman to raise funds for the Join the Fight campaign, and thanks to this amazing event a special treat is now in store for Annie!

Annie won the Cancer Research 2008 award for Volunteer of the Year when the event broke the £100,000 barrier, and in the 3 years since the Tractor Run has now raised over £200,000 for the health charity! Annie has now been chosen out of thousands of nominees to light the way at the London 2012 Olympics as a torchbearer, though whether she’ll be driving her tractor with the flame I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

The Ladies’ Tractor Road Run first began in 2003 involving 50 tractors, and raised an amazing £16,500. Yet thanks to Annie’s hard work and connections, the event continues to go from strength to strength as more people join in this interesting and innovative charity event .

Annie, said -

This event has taken on a life of its own. It’s driven by the remarkable determination, generosity and courage of a lot of special people. Each year I say it, and each year I mean it; it’s about more than money.

Congratulations to Annie for all the charity work she has put in over the last 9 years, and we’ll definitely be keeping our eye out for her during the torchbearer’s challenge. You go girl!!

Alex Warne’s Amazing Cancer Research Story

Alex Warne is one of many real Cancer Research UK success stories Alex was just 6 years old when he was diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Leukaemia back in 2003 after his parents noticed he had lost a lot of energy and had aches in his legs. After being diagnosed, intensive chemotherapy treatment was started for a full year.

After this, Alex then underwent over two years if maintenance chemotherapy, which saw Alex wheelchair bound for much of the treatment.

The fantastic news is Alex is now back at school and playing the sports he loves whilst taking part in creative writing sessions which has seen the creation of ‘The Heaven Flower’ story, which was published in 2010

Alex’s mum, Julie, said -

Alex is such an amazing teenager. I want other kids who are going through cancer to be inspired by Alex. But we will never have our carefree life back again – if there is even a slight problem of illness with Alex, I switch to the day of diagnosis again.

Swim the Irish Sea with the Stars for Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK are delighted to announce that both Sir Richard Branson and Ronan Keating will be captaining teams swimming the Irish Sea in support on the health charity. The aim is simple, to help raise £1 million to aid the lifesaving work that Cancer Research provide every year, and you can join in too.

Sir Richard and Ronan will be captaining relay teams of ten swimmers as they battle against the elements to complete this gruelling task. There’s a whole host of other famous names joining in, plus you can put your goggles on too!

All you need to do is raise a minimum of £100 by 15th July 2011 and be able to swim 3000 metres to take part. 10 places will be drawn at random and 10 for the highest fundraisers, with swimming trials taking place in Brighton on 26-27th July 2011. Remember, 3000 metres is quite a distance, nearly 2 miles, so if you can’t swim 120 lengths of your local baths, forget it!

The ballot for places closes on Friday 15th July 2011 at midday, so be sure you have the stamina and have raised £100 by then to be in with a chance to swim with the stars in September to help raise £1 million for Cancer Research UK.
