WWF charity officials are voicing their concerns as the political deadlock in Madagascar threatens the unique animals found on the island. More than 600 new species have been discovered there since 1999, but many of these animals are now under threat, mostly due to the deforestation of their habitat.

Madagascar’s rain forests are home to a great deal of precious rosewood and other timber, which were torn down during the 2009 political coup. During this time of political upheaval, there was also reports of a huge increase in the illegal hunting of lemurs, with the poaching of other threatened animals also rampant.

WWF’s Madagascar-based regional director, Richard Hughes, said -

We as a species, the human race, we don’t understand the complexities of the natural world around us. We people are the one species with the most power to destroy or protect what’s there.

WWF are calling on the international donors who have cut all but humanitarian aid to Madagascar, to resume support for the many environmental projects that are taking place. With new species being constantly discovered on the island, the wildlife deserves the help of humans to perceiver during the political de stability.

Funds do not need to passed through government officials but directly to private development groups who can ensure the money is used in the proper way. Though WWF have continued to work with government officials to try and expand protected areas, this is becoming more and more difficult as the Madagascan economy deteriorates. If something is not put into place soon, new undiscovered species of animals and plants will remain that way, will little or no chance of survival against the humans that continue to destroy their habitats for personal gain.

These are just 3 of the 1,000 exciting new species recently found in the area of New Guinea, which is divided between Indonesia in the west and Papua New Guinea to the east. This exquisite area of land has one of the world’s most stunning ecosystems, with the third biggest rainforest on the planet. The amazing thing about this is that although it only covers only 0.5% of the Earth’s landmass, it houses up to 8% of the world’s animal species!

The 1,060 species discovered over the last 10 years could only be the beginning of the treasures to be revealed, and only scratch the surface of the area’s amazing ecosystem. With many more species still out their waiting to be discovered, watch this space for more details of these amazing discoveries.

The money raised will be used to help to protect not just fish, but also seas and coastlines across the globe. Their priorities, alongside those of WWF, include -

Safeguarding UK seas

Securing a future for tuna

Protecting marine diversity off east Africa and in the Coral Triangle

From Wednesday 22nd June 2011, M&S will be donating profits from its 5p carrier bags. From this date onwards, all M&S bags will feature the WWF logo, with 40% off all profits going towards the world wildlife charity and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS).

M&S and WWF have worked closely together on a number of projects over the last four years, to not only make improvements in agricultural practices, but also to the marine environment as a whole. The Forever Fish campaign not only help raise a huge amount of money, but also provide funds for the National Schools Partnership to create an education programme for 3,000 primary schools to teach the future generations about fish and marine life.

Head of Business and Industry Relations at WWF, Dax Lovegrove, said -

WWF is continually working to address the over-use of natural resources by championing best practice in the sourcing of goods and driving sustainable retailing. Our partnership with M&S makes a significant contribution to these endeavours. The company shows strong leadership on sourcing various resources including fish, which is important for the protection of fish stocks and their investment will be vital in helping us to address threats to endangered marine species.

Every raffle ticket bought or sold will help safeguard the future of these fascinating creatures, as WWF fight to save their future on the planet.

In the last 60 years orang-utan numbers have halved, and they are now only confined to the rapidly diminishing forests of just two islands, Sumatra and Borneo. Orang-utans once populated areas all the way from southern China to the island of Java, but with almost 50% of packaged supermarket goods now containing palm oil, the world’s demand is now seeing a great deal of illegal logging, even in protected areas.

Simply click on the link below to find out how you can purchase tickets, or even help sell them. There’s even a special ‘super sellers’ draw which will net the winner an extra £500!

Closing date is Monday 27th June 2011 for ticket purchasing, with the draw due on Monday 11th July 2011. So why not help the Orang-utan’s fight for survival and give yourself a chance to win £5000, it’s all for a good cause and will help WWF tackle one of the biggest environmental challenges on the planet.

The WWF’s Earth Hour is held every year during the month of March. Earth Hour is when people across the world come together to turn their lights off for a single hour at 8:30 PM on March 26th to show government’s around the world their concern for climate change. The WWF has a series of high profile black outs across the UK and if you are interested in getting involved you should check out the WWF UK website.
The WWF is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this month with the launch of 'The Panda Made Me Do It' campaign, and as part of the celebration, the WWF is going to send some hugely collectable WWF goodies to first person who sends them a photo of themselves next to one of the giant panda posters that are being used to advertise the campaign.

WWF charity officials are concerned that national energy bills will rise thanks to Government proposals to provide £3.43bn for nuclear generators between 2013 and 2026. The plan to not introduce a carbon floor price makes a mockery of the current Coalition’s alleged opposition to any form of public subsidy for nuclear. WWF UK are now urging the government to introduce a windfall tax that could be used to support energy efficiency.

Head of Energy Policy at WWF-UK, Nick Molho, said -

At a time of fiscal austerity and rising energy bills, it seems crazy to be introducing a policy that gives huge windfall profits to the existing nuclear generators – especially when this sector has been bailed out by the taxpayer on several occasions in the past. The Government should find ways to prevent these windfall profits, and use the revenue to help householders reduce their energy needs.

By providing funds for emerging renewable technologies through the Green Investment Bank, a windfall tax is the perfect solution to help consumers reduce their overall energy consumption. The carbon floor price will operate as a tax on coal and gas power companies, who are dominant in the power generation provided to the UK. As nuclear power stations do not burn fossil fuels, under the current regime they will not have to account for the carbon floor tax, but will in turn benefit from higher electricity prices, increasing their profits.

Chief Scientific Adviser and Policy Director for Greenpeace UK, Dr Douglas Parr, said -

This is yet another taxpayer handout to a failing nuclear industry. The economics of nuclear power have never added up and it has been continually propped up with money from hard-working families. The continued kowtowing of the Government to the nuclear industry beggars belief. Government policy should be backing the building of globally competitive industries based on clean, cutting-edge forms of energy and green growth, not an outdated industry that has never been able to stand on its own two feet.
