The WSPA charity is asking for your help in their global campaign to help stop the needless killing of 20 million dogs each year whilst trying to control rabies. Charity officials are asking for ‘Collars Not Cruelty’, to help governments worldwide tackle rabies in a more humane manner.

International Campaigns Director for WSPA, Ray Mitchell, said -

Rabies poses a serious threat to both human and animal populations in many parts of the world. When confronted with the problem of this fast-spreading disease, national governments sometimes turn to what they believe is the only way to wipe out rabies: wipe out the dog population. However, a world without rabies does not have to mean a world without dogs.

If you’re up for a challenge and like to raise money for great causes, why not take on the WSPA charity Bear Adventure? This amazing trip is a fantastic way to visit the stunning Carpathian Mountains on your way to the WSPA bear sanctuary in Zarnesti, Romania.

The Bear Adventure has been running since 2007, and features a 50 mile trek over 4 days. This year is also possibly the last one that will be organised, so do try and take part if it is something you are interested in, there may not be one next year.

Gillian Dailly, who took part in the trek 2 years ago, said -

My trek over the Carpathian Mountains in Romania to raise money for the World Society for the protection of Animals was a great opportunity to see spectacular scenery, meet new friends but most importantly to see the WSPA’s work in action at the bear sanctuary. When I first saw a bear, so close in it’s natural habitat it made me so happy. Before going I learnt some of the history of the bear’s trauma and how unhappy they must have been living in small rusting cages outside of restaurants and in zoos from the WSPA’s website. Seeing them lying in the sun, playing in the pools and just doing what bears do, was an opportunity too good miss they just looked so content. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone in the future.

Mr Cameron will be representing the UK at next year’s Earth Summit 2012 meeting, where the planet’s future will be discussed by world leaders. Held in Rio, Brazil, this will be the perfect chance to demand a change in world farming.

Check out this hilarious video in support of the WSPA charity ‘Not in My Cuppa’ campaign, which is fighting against battery cow farming. The song, ‘Our Love is in Your Cornflakes’, features the combined talents of comedy actor Kevin Eldon, Adam Miller, creator of Mongrels, and of course WSPA’s superstar cow Molly!

This is a wonderful little ditty, and also rather sad, as mega dairies are planned in Welshpool which will house up to 1000 cows in cramped conditions. Up to 74% of adults surveyed in Wales are against the idea, saying they will never buy milk from such an establishment. Let’s hope that WSPA campaigning can put a stop to these plans and the cows are given the freedom to roam that they so rightly deserve.

RSPB UK are celebrating their ‘Feed the Birds Day 2011′ on Saturday 29th October 2011, and are asking you to round up your leftovers and join them this weekend. With the clocks going back, Autumn will soon be truly upon us, and now is the perfect time to leave extra food and water for our fine feathered friends as the cold snap returns.

Birds really will appreciate the extra help at this time of year, and you don’t need to be a wildlife expert to provide them with provide them a nutritious meal with basic items found in most kitchens. Though birds are of course always partial to seeds and peanuts, they also like -

• mild grated cheese
• cooked rice
• cooked pasta
• unsalted bacon
• cooked potatoes

Perfect for providing birds with extra energy in the cold winter months. In fact, I wouldn’t mind a selection of some of the above myself! Also remember, a fresh supply of water is great for birds to keep their feathers in good condition, and of course to drink and wash in.

I know it sounds crazy to us here in the UK, but some countries in the world are still eating dogs, a quite unbelievably barbaric act that needs to be stopped NOW! WSPA charity officials in South Korea are working hard to put an end to this terrible trade, and you can help by clicking on the link at the bottom of this post to make a one off donation.

Dogs in South Korea are not seen as pets, but as food, and are forced to live in tiny cages covered in their own dirt until they are slaughtered for human consumption. The dogs are farmed, transported, and slaughtered in such a cruel fashion that I feel it need not be mentioned on this blog. Yet light needs to be shed onto this vile trade taking place in certain parts of the world, and we here in the UK can help put a stop to it.

WSPA charity officials are pleased to announce that Deborah Meaden from the top TV show ‘Dragon’s Den’ is supporting their ‘Not in my Cuppa’ campaign. Their latest publication, ‘Weighing up the Economics of Dairy Farms’ addresses the viability of battery cow factory farms against smaller diary farms, which Miss Meaden claims the business models of the mega diary are based on ‘high risk guesswork’.

Deborah Meaden, said -

I’m saying Not in my Cuppa to factory milk from battery cows. Because I don’t think it is the right path to secure the future of Britain’s dairy industry and it certainly isn’t the right choice for the cows within it.

The Dragons’ Den star says that the business model of battery cow dairies would never get her backing as an investment proposal if presented before her on the show. The new report also promotes an alternative business model for the mega diaries that is both sustainable and humane. The publication also concludes that dairy farmers could achieve better returns from average sized pasture-based farms. This is based on the facts that they are less vulnerable to price hikes and global market fluctuations.

RSPB charity officials will be giving more evidence today to support their claim that the proposed expansion of Lydd Airport in Kent will be putting one of the UK’s most important wildlife habitats under threat. The public enquiry will be reconvening today, Tuesday 6th September 2011, after a break in proceedings during the summer. RSPB representatives will offering new ornithological evidence to the panel which will hopefully put a halt to the unnecessary expansion.

RSPB’s south east conservation manager, Sam Dawes, said -

This Public Inquiry is the culmination of five years campaigning to demonstrate that any expansion of Lydd Airport is wholly inappropriate. We have seen the strength of opposition from local people both prior to and during the Inquiry through letter writing and attendance at the public meetings in July. They, along with the RSPB, know what a special place Dungeness is and how important it is to protect it both for wildlife and for people.

The Dungeness RSPB nature reserve is one of the most popular in the UK, with thousands of visitors each year enjoying the local birds and taking part in activities such as pond dipping and bug hunting. The area is also one of the most important wildlife habitats in the UK, meaning any airport plans of expansion must prove that they will not so with damaging the surrounding area.

The WSPA charity is asking for your help to put an end to long distance animal transports across Europe. During these arduous journeys, many animals are left in hot and cramped condition for days, with little food or water.
