UNICEF UK has teamed up with Pampers in a bid to eradicate maternal and newborn tetanus by 2012. Actress Salma Hayek officially launched the ’1 pack = 1 vaccine’ campaign, whereby every pack of Pampers nappies bought in the UK equates to one vaccine against tetanus is donated to UNICEF.
Newborn Tetanus is caused by a bacteria called Clostridium Tetani which enters the body through open wounds. The bacteria produce an extremely potent toxin which attacks the central nervous system. It rages through newborns within days of exposure to the bacteria and without medical treatment almost always leads to death.

Pampers have even produced special fundraising packs encouraging people to host events all across the UK like fun runs or coffee mornings, with all proceeds going towards tetanus vaccines. Pampers will even visit eight regional events and match the amounts raised by the top event.
